A Photography Experiment

So, I have noticed that a lot of people take their pictures on a white back drop.  I think it's really stunning for jewelry or even kids.  But I'm really not sure about cards.

You might have noticed that I normally take my photos on a black back drop.  I think it helps the colors of my cards to
stand out more since the background is so stark and contrasting.  I use a lot of bright colors and they look even brighter against the black.  I'm not 100% sure that's a great thing.

A lot of places, like companies who would want you to take pictures for them seem to think that having a white background is best.  Probably because it's crisp and neutral.  Of course it lends a lot of brightness as well.  Not to mention, it kind of makes coloring balancing a snap, at least for me.

But I'm not sure how I feel about it.  Obviously my photography style is very different from my stamping style.  What do you think?  I could REALLY use the input!

  4. Love that butterfly image Ashley - especially on that blue/green card!! Personally, I play around with lighting and focus more than background - I usually end up taking pics on my dining room table which is dark by the big window for natural light because I don't like using a flash if I don't have to. Sometimes I'll prop up a piece of cardstock behind it in a color (or black or white) if I need added contrast. I think it all depends on the card - for example, a card with a white base sometimes gets lost on a white background. I know...I'm not much help, eh?

  5. Gorgeous cards! I think the background depends on the colors of the cards. Most often I use white, but sometimes a white card doesn't show well with a white background, so I'll use black. I think your pics look great either way.

  6. I use a draped piece of parchment paper behind my cards now. It's white and slightly textured and dark background cards pop off the white. I sometimes use a darker backdrop for lighter cards, but try to keep it neutral. One thing I can tell you for sure, don't use a manilla file folder for your backdrop - that was a mistake.
