Review: Lularoe for the Plus Sized Gal (Part 1)

Hi friends!  I hope you are well!  We are pretty good.  We are trudging through our break time and finding simple ways to enjoy it.

Photo from LulaRoe Facebook Page
Today, I'm writing a review that I've spent a very long time working on!  I'll be reviewing Lularoe clothes specifically for plus sized ladies.  The reason I'm writing this post is that I've been contacted several times by friends who are plus sized asking about size, fit, comfort.  One of my friends said she searched online and couldn't find anything about how Lularoe fits plus sized women.  As a plus sized woman, I know how hard it is to look for clothes especially online.  I know how it can be SO disappointing to drive to a store where they are supposed to have plus sized items and have nothing fit you.  And I know what it's like to be very self conscious about trying to shop and being too big especially in front of strangers.  Even though it's awkward and I feel super insecure posting all these pictures of myself, here goes!  I am in no way sponsored by Lularoe nor do I have any affiliation with the company.  The items I have were either purchased by me, given as a hostess credit for parties I've hosted, and I won 1 item in a giveaway.

First off, I've had both online and in person parties.  If you are interested in these clothes, I highly suggest an in home party with a local consultant.  They bring over tons of clothes and you can try them all on.  You invite your friends and they can shop too.  What's AMAZING is that my friends of all different shapes and sizes could shop together!  I normally cannot shop with most of my friends because I have to go to specialty stores or special order things online.  It was really really fun!  We had snacks, wine, and chatted.  I saw so many friends from different facets of my life that night and it was amazing!

I'm sure you all want to hear about the leggings.  YES!  They are as buttery soft as everyone says they are.  They are really cute!  They only come in two sizes for adults One Size (sizes 2-12) and Tall and Curvy (sizes 12-22.)  Personally, I bounce around in most companies sizes.  Sometimes I'm a 20, sometimes I'm a 22, sometimes I'm a 24.  Lularoe leggings fit me fine.  My friend told me that they fit her mom who is a size 26 as well.  They do vary a little bit from pattern to pattern however.  My blue umbrella pair are super stretchy and comfy but there's also extra bunching at the bottom.  Some of them don't have as much extra length.  Some of them are a little more snug in the tummy area.  I carry a lot of my weight in my tummy.  These variations are not bothersome enough for me to stop buying them.

I LOVE the fun patterns!  At first, I was self conscious about wearing such loud prints.  I tend to wear a lot of black, wanting to look slimmer and wanting to fade into the background.  I will say that people will look at your loud pants.  I've gotten a lot of compliments on them and they are great conversation starters.  However, there are times when I feel like people are staring and I'm working on not letting it bother me.  Also, after I started photographing myself in the leggings, I decided that they actually are quite slimming.  I have large legs in both thighs and calves.  I feel like the patterns kind of trick the eye into thinking my legs are slimmer than they are somehow.  I didn't have access to the athletic leggings to try on.

Here are some outfits that I have and some that I tried on at a party.

Dresses: Personally, I couldn't fit into the Amelia dress or the Julia.  They were too tight in the bust for me. (ETA: Now offered in extended sizes.  To check them out check out my follow up post.)  The Ana (bottom middle worn in 3XL) and the Nicole (bottom left worn in 2XL) dresses work for me.  They are a little snug in the bust but they fit and I can wear them.  I really like the way the skirts are cut, they mask my large stomach.

Shirts: I have a Classic T (top left), a Perfect T (top right), and an Irma (not shown.)  The Irma is boxy on me and I'm still trying to work with it.  The one I have is an XL and I can wear a L.  The Classic T is awesome!  It's a great length and it goes a little longer in the back.  It also flows away from the tummy at the bottom.  I have a 3XL but I could wear a 2XL but it's more snug in the belly.  The Perfect T has slits on both sides and flows away from your midsection as well.  It's also longer and it's very flattering on me.  I have a 3XL and could easily wear a 2XL.  The Randy shirt does not work on me.  I can get it on but it's very tight on my stomach.  (ETA: Now offered in extended sizes.  To check them out check out my follow up post.)

Kimono: I got 3 Lindsay Kimonos.  I'm wearing a blue striped Lindsay in MEDIUM in the top left photo and a teal glittery Lindsay in the lower right picture.  These are cute little additions to my wardrobe.  It's nice to have something to throw on over an outfit.  They are more flowy than cardigans and give a more artsy look.  I felt that the Monroe wasn't really my style with the fringe

Skirts: In the top middle photo, I'm wearing a Lucy skirt in 2XL.  I wear it under the bust with a shirt tucked in and it looks like a dress.  I love the lace!  It's so feminine and pretty!  This isn't something I would have picked out for myself but I tried it on at the party and like it.  Also, you can wear it as a strapless dress.  I've tried it this way with a belt and it was SO cute!  I haven't worn it out like that but I will next date night.  The Maxi skirt is really cute!  I'm wearing it on the lower right corner in a 3XL.  I can also fit in the 2XL.  These are stretchy and have a yoga waistband.  Not pictured is the Cassie pencil skirt.  I can fit in the 2XL and the 3XL but it emphasizes my large belly.  It looks fine with a long shirt over the top.  I didn't have access to try out Lola or Azure.

And the CUTEST thing ever is that they have little girls clothes too!  I only had access to the leggings.  These are the S/M size and they fit sizes 2-6.  They also have M/L and Tween.  They have other little girls clothes too and I can't wait to try them!  They are a bit more than I usually spend on Avery's clothes but if these leggings hold up really well then I might consider spending more on clothes for her.  Also, this might be the only chance I'll ever have to wear Mommy and Me clothes with Avery.  I have friends who are smaller who can shop in the same section as their kids and I don't think I'll every be able to do that.  Thanks LulaRoe for letting me do this fun dressing like my daughter thing!

If you'd like to buy any LulaRoe, you can join my friend's group: LulaRoe by Star.  OR I'm sure there's a consultant close to you.

I hope this post helps someone that might be struggling with finding comfortable plus sized clothes or wondering if LulaRoe would work for their body.  Giant hugs, my friends!

ETA: I wrote a follow up to this post with more styles and the new EXTENDED sizes:

  1. Ashley- thanks for sharing this- I just ordered some and they should be here by the end of the week- I'll admit I am a bit nervous (especially for the irma- I am so afraid it's going to not fit right!)

  2. I must say I had not heard of this company so thank you for posting this! TFS! Annette

  3. I really appreciate this post. I just ordered two pairs of leggings for the first time this morning and am SO nervous about the fit, but I am also a 22 and your post gives me hope! :)

    1. Please let me know how they fit. I'm a 22 and don't want to order any because I'm not sure they will fit. I hate when leggings stretch across my butt and look weird or when they seem thin or roll down at the waistband. I never wear leggings in public unless I have a knee length dress on over the top because of these reasons. I would love to hear what your experience is before I order. Thanks. <3

    2. They're great! I wear a size 14/16 pant and the TC work great on me, and my friend wears a 22/24 pant and the same ones work on her too. They are a great material and I can even wear "granny panties" with them! Be sure to wash cold and not to dry them. That's where some of my friends have had problems with them getting thin or pulling weird.

    3. Im an in betweener 22/24, the leggings are great. Honestly as a plus size woman I know the trying on struggle, I can honestly say Lularoe makes me feel pretty and ok with my size.

    1. Hi Ashley, Can you tell me - I know this is a personal question, but the clothes are quite expensive - what size do you wear at a retailer such as Lane Bryant or Torrid? You look smaller than me by quite a bit, and I was considering buying a 2x Nicole dress that looks like it fits you perfectly. Goodness, it's so cute.

    2. Oh wow, I read your comment below, and I have the same bust size! Maybe it would work for me! Only downside is that I carry a lot of weight in my arms. I don't plan on wearing the dress without a drapey cardigan, but I also don't want the arms to be so tight they're uncomfortable!

  5. Ashley - have you tried an amelia now that they offer 3x? Also is it super creepy for me ask your bust size?! I'm so on the fence about a Nicole or amelia and with the policy being exchange only I hate to spend the money without some reassurance. I think size wise we are close!

I have a strong addiction to maxis, Irmas, perfects and the leggings! I got three packages in the mail today! Yikes!

    Thanks! Ashlei

    1. Hi Ashlei!
I can fit into a 2XL Amelia if it's a stretchy material but I haven't tried the 3XL yet. I am helping my friend with a party on Sunday and I can report back to you. :) My bust size is 44DDD. Where do you live? Maybe I can help you find someone in your area where you can go try it on? My friend Heather has open house times where people can stop buy and shop, maybe someone in your area offers that? I'll report back to you on Monday! Feel free to email me too, my email is on the right sidebar under my picture.

    2. Thanks! There aren't any consultants within about a two hours drive of me. Sad! I do have a friend starting up soon but she hasn't ordered any Amelias.

Thanks for the help! I think you convinced me to bite the bullet and order a dress!

    3. I tried on the 3XL Amelia and the 3XL Nicole and they fit beautifully! Good luck and I hope your friend gets some dresses soon that you can try on.

  6. Ashley,
How tall are you? One of my struggles is I'm only 5' tall and the plus size world seems to think of you at a plus size you must be 5'5" or taller.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Sheila, I have between 5'5" and 5'6". I'm so sorry to hear that you have a hard time finding your size. I have VERY short legs so I have a really hard time finding bottoms.

      Delete
    2. Sheila, I feel your pain. I am 5 feet tall and a size 16/18. Petite clothes usually go up to a size 12, because, if you're short, you must also be thin, right? UGH. Have you had any luck with Lularoe? I am specifically trying to see if anything will fit me.

  7. I have a 44dd to DDD bust and wear a 24 on the bottom. I tried Nicole but it s really tight on the arms. How is the Amelia with that and any idea arm wise the difference between 2and 3xl Nicole? I tried a 2x

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have the same bust size. The 2XL Nicole was tight on my arms but bearable. The Amelia REALLY depends on the fabric. The stretchy Amelia feels great (the material is more waffle like instead of a tight weave) and I can actually wear a 2XL if it's a stretchy material. If it's not as stretchy, I wear the 3XL and it fits me well. The 3XL Nicole does have more room in the bust and the arms. If you want me to, I can measure for you later but I'm a little concerned that my 2xl Nicole is stretched out from me wearing it and it might not be a true measure.

  8. I have a big tummy area and am concerned about the pleats in the Amelia. How did it fall on your midsection? Was it slimming or did it make you feel rounder? Thanks for your post!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personally, I like it. I feel like I can blame the roundness on the pleats instead of my actual roundness. ;) I think I should probably do a follow up post with the new 3xl sizes.

    1. I feel like anything with a pattern (even pastel patterns) made my legs look slimmer. All of the solids including the black show my lumps and bumps. I think because your eye is focusing on the pattern, you don't notice any cellulite or rolls (which I have both.) Also, the way the patterns flow make my legs look MUCH longer than they are. My legs are actually really short and very large.

    1. I'm 5'6" and 195lbs and I'm wearing an OS today for the first time! I always got TC before and they are long so I always get "panty hose crotch" when I wear them. Even if I pull them up to my boobs! I was scared of trying the OS since I'm normally a 14/16, but they fit! I DO have thinner legs, I'm not bottom heavy (I carry my weight in my tummy) so I'm not sure if that's why. I was nervous that the patterns would get too stretched and look funny but they don't. Even if they do in some spots, they are the spots that are covered with a shirt (tummy and butt) so I don't care. As long as my lizards don't look like dinosaurs around my thighs, I'm good. Try OS, you may be surprised! Now what to do with all of the TC pairs I have.....

  23. Great post! Thank you!!! I'm so conflicted on what to purchase for the Irma. I got the 3x Amelia. I'm tall but carry my weight in my tummy (no hips or butt). More like an apple shape. Do you think an Irma would work on me or enhance the apple shape more?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Irma is a tunic and it's supposed to be a "flow" fit. My issue with it is that my chest is wear I'm biggest so anything that hangs from my chest and never pulls back in at the waist makes me look like a blob. If you want to comment with your email address or email me (you can find the link under my picture on the right sidebar) I can email you a picture of me in the Irma. OR if you have Instagram type in #lularoeirma and scroll until you find someone who has the same shape body as you. :D I find this really helpful when I'm unsure how something will look.

  25. Hi Ashley?
I'm so worried. I just ordered 2 Irma's in M. The online party suggested you order two sizes down. I'm usually a 16w-18w. Are these going to be too small?

    1. I think it will be fine! :) I can fit into an XL and I'm much larger than you, if it's super stretchy I could fit in a large. Let me know how it goes.

  26. I'm the same size in pants as you, however, I have a much smaller bust (only a C cup). Does that mean that I should order a 2xl instead of a 3xl in most things?

    1. I would say for the most part, yes. But for the Nicole dress, it would depend on if you have larger arms because that dress can be snug in the arms.

  29. The Randy didn't work on me either. It was super tight. I'm 5'7, size 22/24 and that shirt was much tighter than a typical 22/24 and it was super short. I'm handing them over to my teen daughter lol. I LOVE the leggings, the perfect T, and the irma. I just made my first purchase last week and I'm truly in love. I'm hoping to come across a carly soon. I'm really curious about the Amelia...im a 46F so the bust is obviously a concern.

Also....you look AMAZING in EVERY pic in the outfits you tried on. You have no reason to be self conscious!! At 41 years old, I finally got to the place where my give a damn broke when it comes to what other people think about the way I look. I'm happy most days with how I look and I think that's all that really matters.

  30. SO happy to have found this blog - i was googling about nicole sizing. I usually but a 26/28 from Catherine's for tops b/c i like a little flow and 22/24's for bottoms in their capri and pull-on pants. I'm 5'4'' and still working on losing weight - the eternal struggle!
I love the leggings in TC size and notice them smaller/repeating patterns look better than the ones with big pictures or that are spaced out. I have an Azure skirt in 3x I can wear as a a top or a skirt. My Randy I purchased is tight on me and don't know what to do with it since the consultant I bought it from does not take returns, and wouldn't let me exchange for something else --note to self to check w/ consultant first and obviously never buying from that person again.

I actually just received first 3x Nicole I purchased because I fell in love with the print and had won some lula $$ in a drawing. It fits tight in my bust (46DD) but with the right bra (pushup or underwire) I think i can make it work b/c it is stretchy. As others commented it is tight in the arms -- not so tight that it is uncomfortable per but tight enough that it looks weird if i pull them down to where they should be then my upper arms are noticeably tight and I think other people would take notice... and when i pull up the sleeves to have them fall to my elbow then the material gathers a bit for some reason & causes a roll midway through one arm--weird! BUT I love the print and plan to wear a cardigan to cover my arms since i'm not a fan of them anyway, that should solve that.
It falls just a few inches below my knees and I'm not the most graceful person when it comes to 'sitting like a lady' in dresses so I plan to wear some spanx or most likely save it for fall since the print is perfect for that and wear it with leggings/boots.

  34. Hi Ashley,
Like you I'm a 20 or 22 or 24...depending on brand. How exactly do you go about the leggings? Put them in like pantyhose? I feel like their going to rip or snag. Almost like I am to big for them. I received my first pair and there were2holes. I'm afraid I put them in it from having to "pull".

  37. Hi Ashley, I bought a pair of leggings and 30 minutes later there were holes in the butt cheek area. I wasn't doing anything but walking and sitting. I'm a size 20 and don't have a huge butt. I absolutely loved them! I even had another pair delivered but am afraid to even try on. Those 2 pairs were made in Vietnam. My mom said hers are fine and from China. Does where they're made make a difference? I can't be too big for them since I'm a 22 right? Is there any advice you could help me with?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. where were the holes? There were holes in the leggings once and I figured out it was from where I dug my fingers in to pull them up (wasn't too smart of me). If you think it was a manufacturing error, I would ask your consultant to return them. There was one point when the Vietnam pairs where being cut a lot smaller but they resolved that issue already.

  38. Thank you for this! I have been on the fence about buying any lularoe because I wasn't sure if I could fit.. Or that things would fit weirdly. This has taken away some of the apprehension. I have a couple of questions though.
First, are any of the things that you listed tight on the back? One of my biggest issues with many shirts is that they hug my back and the unpleasant curves there...
Next, how are the leggings holding up for your daughter?

  40. I'm a size 22, but I carry the majority of my weight in my legs and butt. Pants are constantly a challenge for me, usually the calves don't fit, (my calves are huge, I can't wear the widest extra wide calf boots) unfortunately this is also the case with Lularoe, I could barely get them on, and when I finally did you could tell they were stretched to their breaking point, and the crotch didn't make it up to my crotch. Unfortunately these are not made for women with extra thick legs! :(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Have you tried more than one pair? There was a point where LLR was having issues with some factories cutting the TC leggings too small. I have 2 pairs like that. I would recommend you to ask your consultant to exchange the pair you bought for pairs that are cut larger. I have THICK legs. Real thick and I lean towards being a size 24. I think you got a bad pair.

  41. I've had this happen to 2 pair. I washed both on hand wash cycle and air dried them. They were fine when I put them on and a few hours later were holes in the butt. I returned one and the other happened today. I probably won't buy more but I have about 10 pair. Can't keep spending money and hope my butt isn't exposed! I wear them under a Carly dress and I wonder if the friction when I sit down wears at the material. Disappointed. But I've had no problem with Azure skirt, Irma tunic, or Carly dress.

  42. This was a great read! I'm not sure if anyone else above you has asked this, but I have the hardest time finding leggings that aren't see through (especially with lighter prints). I have bought a blackest of the black pair and the second I put them on and bend over...I can vividly see my undergarments. Would you say LLA doesn't have an issue with that?

    1. On a normal occasion, you cannot see through them unless they are super pale like light grey. But my friend asked if she could wear them for working out and I did a DEEP squat for her and you could definitely see my undies.

  43. Hi Ashley, I appreciate you putting yourself out there for us plus size gals with a newly acquired affinity for Lularoe :-)
I have an XL Irma (I would normally wear a 2XL in most blouses, and some 1XL) so I followed the sizing chart that said size down. I got it, and liked it, that is until I tried it on. My arms barely fit the sleeves, but the torso area fit fine. I feel like the incredible hulk, one flex and it will rip. I wondered if maybe it was a fluke, but you mentioned you have "big arms" and that you liked Irma. Can you elaborate on whether or not you've encountered this issue before? Maybe it's like the leggings that sometimes differ a bit in sizing. It's past the time for exchange anyway I've deleted the person's name and contact info, so I'm stuck with it for now. :-( Thanks again for your review.

    1. I think you have me confused with someone else? I do not wear the Irma, I mentioned in this post that it's too boxy for me and in my follow up I said it made me look like a blob. That being said, when Lularoe first started making Irma, the sleeves were a lot smaller than they are now. Perhaps you got a shirt from before they redesigned it to make the sleeves bigger?

    2. I apologize, I must've read a comment from someone else. I'll just say it's Monday LOL. I will go back through and read more of your replies since I only read a couple. So from your recent reply it's definitely a NO-GO. Our shape is quite similar. I probably should just donate it. I will definitely have to try the Perfect and Classic. :-) Thank you again for all the info.

    3. There are Facebook groups where you can sell your Lularoe, people spend good money on it. You could probably get most of what you spent back. Good luck!

  44. First time I wore my leggings I got holes in the butt. I'm usually a 22/24 and these didn't feel too tight. These are so comfy but don't want to waste the money to get another pair if it will just happen again.

    1. Sorry that happened to you! Try returning them to your consultant.

    2. In your option do you think its worth trying another pair? Do you feel there is a difference in where they are made? I see people asking that before they buy the leggings. This pair was made in indonesia but I see a lot for sale made from veitnam.

    3. I have probably 30 pairs and I've had issues with 2. One was when they just switched factories to Vietnam (last year) and one was holes in my very favorite pair because I was rough and grabbed them and yanked them up, there are literally small holes where my fingernails punctured the fabric. People say to treat them like pantyhose and roll them up your leg instead of pulling or yanking. I have not had that issue in other pairs but I also try to be more careful now.

  45. So, as a size 26 myself (in most stores, at least), if I were to get the tall and curvy leggings, they'd still fit me?

    1. You'd have to work with your consultant and make sure they are a stretchy and larger cut pair. Sometimes they vary in size a touch. I would recommend finding someone local and asking to try a pair on.

  50. I can not thank you enough for sharing! I am nearly the same size as you and this has helped so much with making decisions with new styles that I can only find with consultants that are not local. This really helps take the worry out of trying new things!
