Date Your Spouse: Live Theatre Featuring Intrepid Theatre Labs and Music Circus

Hi friends!  Hope you're all having a great summer!  I find the in summer it's harder to squeeze in date nights but they are even more important since having the kids on break all day every day can be tiring.  Today, we are going to talk about going to see plays at the theatre.

I know that I said we are trying to get away from the whole dinner and a movie rut but I think the theatre is actually a really different experience that a movie.  There's something about a live show.  The energy is infectious.  It's similar to the difference of watching a band perform on TV or in person.

I was given press passes to see these shows, as always all opinions are my own.

Right now, Sacramento theatre is in full swing!  There are options all over Sacramento to see live theatre.  From huge Broadway productions to sweet little kids in theatre groups putting on amazing shows.  There's literally something for every single price point so do not let price keep you away from the theatre!

For our date night, my hubby and I got to see the first show put on by Intrepid Theatre Lab (ITL) in Sacramento.  ITL's mission is to bring classic and contemporary awareness and appreciate to people of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.  They want to create works that is accessible and relevant to modern audiences.

We got to see Baltimore by Kristen Greenidge at The Guild Theatre in Oak Park.  Here is the description: "When a racially-charged incident divides her first-year students, reluctant resident advisor Shelby finds herself in the middle of a conversation she does not want to have. As pressure to address the controversy mounts from residents, the new dean, and even her best friend, Shelby must decide if she will enter the fray or watch her community come apart at the seams. Sharp, funny, and searing, Baltimore explores the complexities of racism from the perspective of eight culturally diverse college students."

The play was thought provoking and emotional.  I really enjoyed hearing the perspectives of the different college students about the same issue.  It was definitely written with a young, hip audience in mind while being relevant to any person.  It was deep and thought provoking.  My husband and I really enjoyed it.

This was also our first time at The Guild Theatre and it was awesome!  It's a smaller theatre and there's not a bad seat in the house.  The seats were comfortable.  I hope to see a show there again soon!

If more classical theatre is more your style, I also got to check out Music Circus for the first show of this season which is Singin' in the Rain.  It was a magical night of musical theatre!  The Wells Fargo Pavilion is circular so the stage is round.  The actors come up and down the aisles to get to the stage giving it a very immersive feel.  If you love musicals, you have to check out Music Circus.  It is at a higher price point so this might be more of a splurge date.  Music Circus tickets courtesy of Get on the Map.

No matter what your style, I encourage you to go out and check out Sacramento's amazing theatre scene!  I've seen tickets for as low as $8 so if price is stopping you from seeing theatre, check out your community theatre companies!  It doesn't always have to be a huge show (says me who wants to go to Hamilton every year.)  There's tons of amazing performing arts in Sacramento and the surrounding cities!

Do you have ideas for more dates?  Please let me know in the comments!

Date Your Spouse: California State Escape

Hello!  Are you ready for another Date Your Spouse post?  I sure hope so because that's what I'm writing today.  (Really awkward if you weren't ready.)  Today, for our most intellectually challenging date yet we tried out California State Escape which is escape room games.

*** We were given comp tickets in exchange for an honest review.  Opinions are always 100% mine and 100% honest.***

If you haven't heard of escape rooms, they are like a live action puzzle game that you solve.  You go to their location and they have rooms set up with themes and storylines.  You usually have 60 minutes to try to solve all the puzzles and "escape" the room.  (In the state of California, due to fire safety laws, they cannot actually lock you in so usually the door you enter through is open.  If you get overwhelmed or need a water or potty break, you can just walk right out.)  There are a huge variety of different rooms.  There are rooms that are family friendly where people bring their kids or rooms that are super scary.

California State Escape (CSE) is one of the more immersive experiences I've had.  I've been to escape rooms that were super simply decorated like an office.  California State Escape is more like walking into a movie set.  Everything is highly detail oriented and you definitely feel like you are in the scenario.  Also, they do not pair you with strangers at CSE.  You do the room with only the people who you came with.  This is nice because it can be really awkward to work with people you don't know.  You also have a host who will give you clues if you want.  The host watches and listens to you from another room to see where you are in the puzzle.

We decided to try their puzzle called Space Sector which is considered to be one of the less difficult puzzles.  They usually suggest that you have at least 5 people for this room so it's perfect for a group date.  We were only able to find one friend to go with us on this day and we did fine.

What makes an escape room a really great date is that it's very interactive!  You have to communicate well and work together to solve the puzzles.  In fact, sometimes you physically have to have multiple people on a puzzle to get it to work.  It's also really interesting to see how your date responds in certain situations.  Who is adventurous enough to climb into crawl spaces?  Who gets frustrated and takes all the puzzle pieces from people?  (Spoiler alert, the last one is me.)

We had a GREAT time at California State Escape!  We were able to escape our room with about 6.5 minutes to spare.  We were challenged the whole time but never to the point of frustration.  There were definitely moments when I thought we wouldn't make it out on time which I think it part of the fun.  Our host Brandon was attentive and gave good clues without ever giving away too much.  An escape room is a great experience to have before dinner so you have something fresh to talk about over your meal.

Overall, I can't wait to go back to California State Escape!  The whole experience from booking to checking in to leaving with photos was great!  Everyone is really friendly.  The detail laden rooms, immersive experience, and complex puzzles justify the cost.  This would also be great for work places to have team building events.  They are currently working on a new room which I've heard will be WIZARDLY and I am super excited for that one to open!

Have you tried an escape room?  What are your thoughts?  Also, do you have ideas for a date?  Please leave them in a comment below!

Date Your Spouse: Chef's Dinner at Zocalo Sacramento

Hi friends!  I hope you're doing well!  I have to tell you that "research" for the Date Your Spouse series has been super fun!  We are really pushing ourselves out of our usual routine and it's a been a great time!  This next date is a location we've been to before but an event we had never attended.

Every month, usually on the first Monday, Zocalo Midtown offers a Chef's Dinner event.  (For May, they are having the dinner on April 30 to kick off a week of Cinco de Mayo celebrations.)  The Chef's Dinner is a 3 course meal where each course is paired with a drink all for only $30 a person!  The drink is usually a cocktail, wine, or beer.  This is a steal!  Usually an entree alone would cost over half that amount not to mention drinks!  (I was given tickets to this event for review.  As always, all the opinions are mine and 100% honest.)

Zocalo transforms their restaurant for the Chef's Dinner.  They block off about half their restaurant for the event.  (The other half is for regular dinner service.)  They set beautiful tables with place settings and floral arrangements.  Menu cards are printed out for each guest.  It's really nice attention to detail.  The restaurant itself is already beautiful and always decorated tastefully but they go a step beyond for the Chef's Dinner.

We got to attend the April 1 dinner and the theme was SPRING!  Oh how I love spring menus!  I love the fresh vegetables and how we start to see fruit again!  This menu was phenomenal!  They even started us with an extra little bite and champagne bellini in addition to the 3 courses.   We were also served chips, salsa, and the house bean dip.

This menu featured an asparagus salad which was so delicious!  We got big but tender stalks of asparagus that was perfectly grilled, topped with arugula salad on top of a poblano puree.  I loved every single bite of this dish!  This was paired with a Heretic Lager since Heretic Brewery was their partner for this month's dinner.

The main course was a lamb in red chile broth with beans, rice, and tortillas.  This was paired with Heretic Evil Twin which is a red IPA.  The lamb was great!  It was really flavorful.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the green rice at Zocalo, it's one of my favorite things about the restaurant.  Their hot tortillas that are a hybrid of corn and flour tortilla are TO DIE FOR.  Needless to say, I cleaned my plate.

The dessert was a strawberry shortcake done "dulce de leche" style paired with a Fresca Sting which was like a spicy strawberry margarita.  Personally, I do not prefer "soaked" cakes.  The texture is not my jam.  I did eat the drier parts of the cake and I really enjoyed it.  I ate all the strawberries and whipped cream.  Other people around me LOVED the cake!

Overall, the whole experience was amazing!  The value was incredible!  I could easily spend well over $60 on an evening of food and drinks and not even get dessert or appetizers.  This dinner is probably one of the best values in Sacramento!  Plus it is a lovely event full of happy people and delicious food!  I will definitely be returning to the monthly Chef's Dinner!

I think a Chef's Dinner is probably a date that suits me best.  What kinds of dates suit you?  Do you have a date idea for me?  Please leave me a comment and let me know!

Date Your Spouse: At Home With Datebox

Hi friends!  I'm so sorry that so much time has passed since my last Date Your Spouse post!  Life has been crazy and there have been some dates we went on that didn't quite make the cut for a blog post.  But don't worry, I have a great one for you today!

***I received a complimentary Datebox for the purpose of review.  All thoughts and opinions are honest and 100% my own.***

My hubby and I tried DateBox!  DateBox is a service that delivers a box to your door with a fun date idea that can be done at home.  (They also offer a digital only version for only $7.99!)  This is a perfect way to have a date at home after the kids go to bed or any time when you're home needing a date.  Spoiler Alert!  I'm going to show the inside of a box so you can see if it's worth the value to you.
We got a box for a "S'mores Date" which I thought was a fun idea!  And they really thought about everything for this date!  Here's what came in the box:

The box includes:
~ Candle making supplies for two small candles
~ S'mores kit with chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers.  Also, skewers to roast marshmallows.
~ 2 mugs and 2 packets of hot cocoa mix
~ Deck of cards
~ Coupon for a free Redbox rental
~ Instruction book

I loved the instruction book for the Datebox!  It's written in a super fun way like one of your friends planned a date for you.  It also has great additional things for your date like a Spotify Playlist (which we didn't get to listen to since we're not members), Conversation Starters, instructions for 3 different card games (only 1 I've played before), and instructions for your date.  They also have great ideas like for our date they suggested we build a blanket fort to go with the camping feel of the s'mores.

I thought the whole thing was so well planned out!  I thought the idea of making candles that you use later is such a fun idea!  It gives you a different experience that you might not do on your own.  They really thought of everything in this box.  One box is good for hours of fun.  I think it's well worth the $39.95 price point since you just open the box and the whole evening is planned for you.  Not only that but we keep all the items so if we wanted to recreate the date, we could.

What are your favorite stay at home date ideas?  Have you tried a date subscription?  Let me know!

Date Your Spouse 2: Palladio in Folsom

You guys, I have a life hack for you.  If you go on a date during the day while your kids are at school, you don't have to pay for a sitter.  Also, you won't have to deal with crowds and lines and most likely, your meals will cost less.  In this blog post, I wanted to show you how to have a fun date at the Palladio in Folsom.

This post is in partnership with The Palladio.  As always, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.  Thank you for supporting companies who support my work!

Quick confession, my kids have been off school for the ENTIRE month of February since they attend year round school.  Luckily, my sister in law was able to watch them for me so hubby and I could go on a day date.  I feel like day dates are so underrated.  Not only can you save money but there's just something special about being out during the day together!  It's like when you were single.  LOL, who remembers way back when you didn't have bags under your eyes?

First, we started our day at Palladio by getting hubby a smoothie at Pure Life Juice Company so he could have lots of energy while I shopped... Listen, we were at a shopping center and part of marriage and dating is doing a balance of what each person likes.  We popped into H&M (where he shopped too) and Charlotte Russe.  Then, I got a few things from Torrid and Apricot Lane.
Pure Life Juice Company
Jewelry at Apricot Lane and SHOPPING!

Next, we headed off to lunch!  We had lunch at Grist Beer Hall which will soon be celebrating their 1 year anniversary.  They have 50 taps and they ALL rotate so you never know what you'll find.  They have everything from sours to stouts.  My hubby went with a sour called 1 Ton Of... Blackcurrant from the brand To Øl which is imported from Denmark.  Grist also has local beers on tap such as Fort Rock, New Glory, Bike Dog, and more.  I also like that they have cider because I'm a cider kind of girl.

Grist calls their menu "locally curated artisan food."  They have starters, small plates, salads, main dishes, desserts, and a kids menu.  I'm gonna admit that mistakes were made on my part.  LOL!  I really wanted to try the Crispy Poutine. (My first mistake was not adding the pork belly.  WHY?  If there's an option for pork, you should say yes!)  The poutine comes with a stout gravy which is such a great tie into the beer hall.  It was delicious!

For our main dishes, hubby got the Lemon Pesto Chicken Sandwich and I got the Marinated Skirt Steak.  (Mistake 2 was I should have gotten salad or soup as a side since poutine is a french fry dish but I didn't think to ask for a different side.)  I had to have some of hubby's sandwich, you know, for research.  The chicken sandwich was so delicious!  The brightness of the lemon was a lovely addition to this sandwich which also had balsamic onions, Havarti cheese, and bacon.  My steak was absolutely delicious!  It was tender and well seasoned.  The fries were crispy and super fluffy inside!  It was an excellent meal!

Then, we headed over to Barnes and Noble to browse.  We love book stores!  We used to go hang out in book stores all the time until the book stores around us closed.  We chat about the titles we see.  We tell each other about why we are picking out specific books.  Personally, I love grabbing a big stack of magazines and sit down with a cup of coffee at a book store.  The staff at Barnes and Noble was so sweet!  They even tried to make me a pretty latte even though they don't do latte art there.  We really enjoyed our time there!

After the book store, we made our way over the Pretty Sweet for dessert.  You HAD to know that dessert was coming.  Pretty Sweet is a GORGEOUS shop.  The decor is very modern and their desserts look super gourmet!  We shared a Lemon Meringue Tart which was a lovely treat!  We also got some beautiful macarons to take home.

Last, Dustin went to go pick up the kids and I headed into Charming Charlie by myself.  My sister in law needed to get ready for work and I wanted my Instagram photographer to take some pictures of us.  I found ALL the fun things at Charming Charlie!  That store makes my heart sing and the one at the Palladio is HUGE!  I could spend all day in there.  If you haven't been, it's all sorted by color and that makes my heart so happy.

Going to the Palladio was a great way to spend a day date!  They have other more "date" type of places to go to as well like their Palladio Luxe Cinema is AMAZING and you can eat while watching a movie (but we are trying to get out of the dinner and a movie rut, remember?)  They have Color Me Mine where you can paint your own pottery and Painted where you can do a paint (canvases) and sip.  There's also a spa at the Palladio if you can take your date into some pampering.  Lots of great date options!

Do you go on day dates?  Where do you go?  Let me know!  I'm always looking for new ideas!

DateMeSacramento: A Surprise Date Planning Service

This year on the blog, I'd like to start a Date Your Spouse series.  I think it's so important to take care of your marriage!   I've been married for almost 13 years.  It is so easy to forget about date night especially when you have kids.  Dating goes on the back burner and I believe this is a mistake.  Over this year, I'll be sharing all different kinds of dates for all different budgets.  You don't have to be married to enjoy these dates either but I know that married people tend to put off date night more.  First up is DateMeSacramento.

*** This post in a collaboration with DateMeSacramento.  The opinions as always are honest and 100% my own.  ***

DateMeSacramento is a brand new company that launched on Feb 1.  The creators are a couple that I know from Instagram, Katja and Caleb.  I am so excited for them and so proud of their entrepreneurial spirits!  DateMeSacramento is a service that plans a surprise date for you.  You don't know where you are going until the email you the morning of your date!

First, you choose how many people are going on the date.  You can go with 2 people or you can go as a group.  Then you pick the level.  Prices start at $90 and go up to $400 for the 2 person date.  Next, you get a survey asking about your interests, activity level, and the kind of date you're looking for.  That's it!  You sit back and wait for them to plan your date.

We got an envelope a few days before our date from Caleb and Katja.  The letter told us what to wear and what to bring on our date.  It also gave us a few clues about what we were doing.  Now, if you wanted to be super surprised, you could open the letter the morning of your date too.

We got to go on a modified level 2 date.  Due to another commitment, we were not able to do the last part of our date which would have been a dinner reservation with a special set-up.  While the meal bill is the responsibility of the guest, DateMeSacramento makes your reservation and has certain perks at certain restaurants such as special menu items or perhaps a complimentary appetizer or drink.

Onto our date!

Stop 1: The Prickly Pear

Now, The Prickly Pear has a slightly odd set up.  They have a green house and succulent garden in a residential neighborhood in Oak Park.  There is a fabulous space on their lot with tables and stools where you can sit and pot our own succulents.  It is such a cute space!  The owner, Mona is AMAZING!  She's so sweet and knowledgeable!  You can tell she puts her heart into everything she does!

We were each able to pick out a jar which Mona hand paints, sands, and turns into a planter.  Dustin decided to do a full sized jar but I could not resist the mini jar.  It is pink and SO cute!  Dustin told Mona that he wanted to put his succulent on his desk which doesn't have any sunlight.  She helped him pick out a nice sturdy plant for indoors.  I wanted a pretty blush succulent to match my jar.  Then, we went to the potting station and Mona helped us pot our succulents.  She also gave us care instructions for each plant and said we could contact her any time with questions.

We had a great time!  I loved meeting Mona!  She has an amazing heart and we have already talked about doing some events together.  Also, succulents are probably the only kind of plant that will survive in my house so that was an excellent choice!

Stop 2: AVA Virtual Reality

AVA Virtual Reality is located in Natomas by the movie theater.  Upon entering, you check in at a desk and sign a waiver.  They have seven stations where individuals can go in and get set up for the virtual reality games.  They have a lot of games to choose from and you can play collaboratively which is great for a date.  You get set up with a VR mask, headset with a microphone, and controllers.  This is VERY immersive!

The first game we played was a zombie game which I would not recommend starting with.  It was hard to get used to the controls while being attacked by zombies.  Also, I feel like you should go into that game with some sort of plan with your partner and I felt slightly uncomfortable on the headsets.  Also, at one point I went underwater in the zombie game and it was rough on me, I felt a little woozy.  The next game was a laser tag game which was somewhat easier to play but gave me the same issues.  It was hard to figure out how to move and how to shoot while trying not to get shot at.  At this point, I needed a break.  The VR is very immersive and wearing all the equipment made me a little sweaty.

The last game is a game I would suggest new people starting with.  Dustin decided to try the Escape Room game and I sat in the same room as him with no headset on.  This was great because while there was a time limit, you could move around and interact with objects without fear of being reset.  This was also easy to work collaboratively on.  I could see the room on the screen.  I helped point out things he should do in the game.  This game would also be good for a work team building type event. Dustin also tried going into a game for a few minutes where he could explore a wizard's lab which would also be a good one to start with.  He said that after wearing the VR equipment for the full hour, he felt weird walking around in real life.  He can't wait to go again and talked about it a lot with friends and family the next day.

At this point in the evening, we would have headed off to dinner planned by DateMeSacramento but instead we went to a birthday dinner for a friend.

DateMeSacramento is such a fun way to have a date!  They pushed us out of our box.  We tried two things that we've never tried before.  Both are activities that we might not otherwise try but we enjoyed.  They were also really thoughtful.  I feel like The Prickly Pear was something more for me and AVA was something more for Dustin.  It was a nice balance of things we enjoy and it was really well thought out!  We often get stuck in a rut doing the same old dinner and a movie thing.  DateMeSacramento was a great way to get out of the rut.  For the cost, this would be great for a birthday or anniversary.  You can even give a date as a gift by purchasing from their website.

You can find DateMeSacramento on social media:

Tell me all about your favorite date nights!  I'm hoping to make this a twice a month series which is A LOT...  LOL!
